2024/ 10/ 21
For this study session, we have invited Professor Okuyama Toshihiro, a professor in the Department of Journalism at the Faculty of Letters at Sophia University, who was a former Asahi Shimbun reporter and has been active at the forefront of journalism for many years, and who currently raises and explains social issues through the media and is also actively involved in the 100-Article Committee, to explain the Whistleblower Protection Act and how to respond to scandals, citing real-life examples.

【Webinar Summary】

◆Title: Whistleblower Protection Act and Scandal Responses
◆Summary: The revised Whistleblower Protection Act will come into effect in 2022, requiring businesses, governments, and media organizations to respond to scandals differently than before. The prohibition on searching for whistleblowers, which requires accused businesses to establish a system that includes measures to prevent the search for whistleblowers who have provided internal information to journalists, is just one example of this "different response." There have been cases where the head of an organization has been removed from his position for violating this rule. We would like to go back to the purpose of whistleblower protection and dig deeper, referring to actual examples, to see what has changed and how we should respond.
